These carnival favorites taste amazing but I always walk away feeling like I ate a ball of grease. If you feel the same way then this recipe is for you! These baby’s are baked not fried and they can be in your mouth in 30 minutes 🙂
First you need a cup of water
Then 1/2 cup butter (or 1 stick)
1 cup flour
1/8 teaspoon salt
and 2 tablespoon powdered sugar (I probably used a bit more because I wanted mine a bit sweeter)
Preheat your oven too 400 degrees and coat your baking sheets
You want to combine your water, butter and salt. Stir until it comes to a rolling boil
Once it is boiling you want to lower the heat a bit and add all your flour at once
Stir vigorously until your ingredients form a ball and take off the heat. At this point set it aside and let it cool for 10 minutes
Once cool add to a larger bowl and add in one egg at a time. Beat with a wooden spoon until each egg is incorporated.
Add to a pastry bag. The easiest way I have found to do this is by using a large glass. I put my bag into the glass and fold down the edges. It holds the bag in place so I can fill it with my mixture 🙂
Once filled, cut the tip off the bag and make a generous circle on your baking sheet. I did small, medium and large circles so that L was able to eat one easily.
Then make a zig-zag pattern within the circle making sure it connects at an edge
Bake them in the oven for 20 minutes or until golden brown. Place them on a cookie wire and coat with powdered sugar. Make sure to eat them while they are warm but, be warned you may not stop at one!
When finished these little babies only have 7g of fat in them. For funnel cake I think that’s pretty decent!
